Detach a Student From a Parent

Detach a student from a parent

Summary: If a child should no longer be linked to a parent, for example when they have aged out or moved to a new school, you can detach them from the parent's profile. Open the parent's profile, go to Students, click the three-dots (…) menu next to the child, choose Edit, set the Attached / Detached radio to Detached, and click Update. The child is removed from that parent. If that was the parent's only attached student, the parent is automatically moved to Inactive; if the parent still has other active students, they stay Active.

Who can do this

Parent access-control is an Account Owner / Administrator task. Here is who can do it:

  • Account Owners and Administrators can detach a student from a parent.
  • Teachers manage their classroom only and do not manage parent records.

The way to tell is the context switcher in the upper-right corner. If you can switch to Account Admin, you can detach a student from a parent. If you only see your classroom there, you do not have permission, and you will need to ask an administrator for help.

Step-by-step

  1. Open the parent's profile. Click the parent's name to open their profile.
  2. Go to Students. Open the Students section and find the child you want to remove.
  3. Open the three-dots menu. Click the three-dots (…) menu next to that student.
  4. Click Edit. Choose Edit from the menu.
  5. Set the relationship to Detached. Set the Attached / Detached radio to Detached.
  6. Click Update. Click Update to save. The child is removed from this parent's profile.
  7. Confirm. The student no longer appears under the parent's attached students.

What happens to the parent's status

A parent stays active only while they have at least one active student attached. Detaching affects status like this:

  • If the child you detach was the parent's only attached student, the parent automatically moves to Inactive.
  • If the parent still has other active students attached, the parent remains Active.

Detach vs. removing the child

Detaching only breaks the link between this parent and this child. It does not delete the student. If your goal is to remove a parent from the account entirely, detaching their last child is one of the ways to do that, because it moves the parent to Inactive. See the related article on removing a parent's access for the full picture.

A few things worth knowing

  • Detaching is a relationship change, not a deletion. The student record stays in your school.
  • A parent moved to Inactive can be restored later by attaching an active student again.
