Attach a new student to an existing parent
Summary: When a family already in your school enrolls another child, you do not need to create a new parent. You attach the new student to the parent who is already there. First add the new child on the Students page. Then open the parent's profile, go to Students, click Add Student, select the child from the Student dropdown, choose the relationship, and click Submit. The younger child is then linked to the parent alongside their older siblings.
Who can do this
Managing parents and guardians is an Account Owner / Administrator task. Here is who can do it:
- Account Owners and Administrators can attach students to parents.
- Teachers manage their classroom only and do not manage parent records.
The way to tell is the context switcher in the upper-right corner. If you can switch to Account Admin, you can attach a student to a parent. If you only see your classroom there, you do not have permission, and you will need to ask an administrator for help.
Step-by-step
- Add the new student first. Make sure the new child has already been added on the Students page. You are linking an existing student record to the parent, so the child must exist first.
- Open the parent's profile. Click the parent's name to open their profile. There is no need to create a new parent, because this family is already in your school.
- Go to Students and click Add Student. In the parent's profile, open the Students section and click Add Student.
- Select the child from the Student dropdown. Open the Student dropdown, which lists active students with their photos, and select the correct child.
- Choose the relationship. Select the parent's relationship to that child.
- Submit. Click Submit. The new child is now attached to the parent alongside their older siblings.
When to add a new parent instead
You only need to add a new parent when the family is brand new to your school. If the parent already has a child enrolled, do not create a duplicate. Attach the new student to the existing parent profile using the steps above. This keeps all of a family's children under one parent record.
A few things worth knowing
- The child must already exist as a student record before you can attach them, so add the student first.
- A single parent profile can have several children attached to it, which is exactly how siblings are handled.
