Create a classroom

Summary: You create a new classroom from the Account Admin area so you have somewhere to enroll children and do your record keeping. Switch to Account Admin using the context switcher in the upper-right corner, open Classroom in the left menu, and click Add Classroom. Enter the classroom's name, choose the grade or cycle year it serves (it can be one grade or several), and click Create. Once the classroom exists, you can begin adding students to it.

Who can do this

Creating a classroom happens in the Account Admin area, so it requires that level of access. Account Owners and Administrators can create classrooms.

The way to tell is the context switcher in the upper-right corner. If you can switch to Account Admin, you can create a classroom. If you only see your classroom there, you do not have permission, and you will need to ask an administrator for help.

Step-by-step

  1. Switch to Account Admin. Use the context switcher in the upper-right corner and select Account Admin rather than a classroom role.
  2. Open the Classroom section. In the left menu, click Classroom.
  3. Add a classroom. Click the Add Classroom button.
  4. Name the classroom. Type or select the name for your new classroom.
  5. Choose the grade or cycle. Select the grade or cycle year the classroom serves. At least one grade or year is required, and you can choose more than one for a multi-age classroom. The grades or years you assign determine which curriculum is available in the classroom. See "Choosing grades or cycle years" below.
  6. Set the day begins and day ends times. The modal includes Day Begins and Day Ends times, which default to 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Adjust them to match your classroom's hours if needed.
  7. Set a capacity (optional). You can set an optional Capacity for each weekday if you want to track how many children the classroom holds on a given day.
  8. Create the classroom. Click Create. Your new classroom is now ready, and you can begin adding students to it.

Choosing grades or cycle years

When you create a classroom, you select the grade or cycle year it serves. At least one grade or year is required. A classroom can be set to a single grade or to more than one, which fits multi-age Montessori environments where children of different ages work together in one prepared environment. The grades or cycle years you assign also determine which curriculum is available in the classroom, so choose all of the grades or cycle years your classroom holds.

What to do after creating a classroom

A new classroom starts empty. The next step is to enroll children in it so you can begin record keeping. You can add students to the classroom from the Account Admin area. See "Related articles" below for how to create and assign students.

A few things worth knowing

  • You must be in the Account Admin role to create a classroom, not in a classroom role.
  • A classroom can serve a single grade or several grades for a multi-age group, and at least one grade or year is required.
  • The grades or years you assign determine which curriculum is available in the classroom.
  • The modal includes Day Begins and Day Ends times (default 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM) and an optional per-weekday Capacity.
  • A new classroom is empty until you enroll children in it.
