Record a lesson from the Journal
Summary: The Journal's Lessons tab lets you record a lesson for one child or several at once, right from the grid where you view progress. Navigate to a subcategory within a category to see all of its lessons, then click a child's box under their name next to the lesson you want to record. You can record and customize fully — with a photo, element selection, and notes — or record many lessons quickly in a batch entry with less detail. After saving, you can return to the activities page to add elements and lesson notes, though a photo cannot be added after the fact.
Who can do this
Any assigned teacher can record lessons for the children in their classroom. Owners and Administrators can record for any classroom. No special role is required.
Step-by-step
- Open a subcategory. In the Journal, navigate to a subcategory within a category. All of the lessons in that subcategory are listed.
- Select the child. Click a child's box under their name, next to the lesson you want to record for them.
- Select more children (optional). You can choose multiple children for the same lesson.
- Record and customize. Fill in the full details — visibility, a photo upload, element selection, and note fields.
- Set the assessment level. Mark the child's level, for example presented.
- Save. Save the entry. It is recorded and appears in the activities feed.
Recording one lesson in full detail vs. a batch entry
There are two ways to record from the Lessons tab, and the difference is a tradeoff between detail and volume:
- Record and customize gives you the full form — visibility, photo upload, element selection, and shared or private notes — for one lesson at a time.
- Batch entry lets you record many lessons at once, but with less detail. In batch entry you can set only the date, the assessment level, and whether the entry is shared with parents. There is no photo upload, no specific element selection, and no private or shared lesson notes during a batch entry. When you are done, click Record and Close to save them all at once.
Adding details after saving
If you used a batch entry, or you simply want to add more later, go to the Activities page and click Edit on the saved entry. You can add specific elements and lesson notes after the fact. You cannot add a photo once the lesson has been saved — a photo can only be attached at the time you record.
A few things worth knowing
- Recording for several children at once is the quickest way to log a group lesson with full detail.
- Batch entry trades detail for speed — reach for it when you are logging many lessons and the date, level, and visibility are all you need.
- Elements and lesson notes can always be added later from the Activities page; a photo cannot.
- "Shared with parents" means the entry is eligible to appear on an activity report — it does not push anything to parents in real time.
